Alex Pitts was among a team of six furniture makers honoured to be chosen to make 10 special congregation chairs for the King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey. The Prince’s Foundation runs the Snowdon School of Furniture in its workshops at Highgrove House, and invited alumni to make these chairs of national importance.

Alex jumped at the opportunity, saying, “This project had everything going for it, traditional joinery, British oak, scenic workshops and royal connections. It’s a dream come true!”

10 of the 100 congregation chairs were made by the small team, with a keen eye for quality, ensuring they were the best made pieces possible. Alex says, “The difference between handmade and mass produced furniture is not just about strength and longevity of the piece, but also the fit and finish. At APITTSfurniture, I manipulate and join every part of the furniture I make, deciding every detail, including how it feels to the user and how the design fits into the space it will live.”

In light of this celebratory event, Alex is producing chairs inspired by the royal design. Please email Alex to enquire about having some made for yourself.
