APITTSfurniture School

The APITTSfurniture woodwork school - giving you the opportunity to learn the art of fine furniture making.

The school is made up of a number of different classes that cover a variety of traditional woodwork techniques, ranging from “What is a chisel?”, which covers tools you will find in a hand tool woodworker’s toolbox and basic joinery, all the way to mastering the craft of dovetails and producing a mortice and tenon tool box to show your new skills.

Classes are small, with just 5 participants, allowing for a personalised experience. All tools, materials and PPE are provided so no need to source anything yourself! These classes are for adults only.

Tools are of very high quality, and each participant will have their own tray of tools and workbench to use during the class, as well as a large selection of communal tools to choose from.

All classes take place at my workshop near Marsh Green, Kent. This is approximately a five minute drive from Lingfiend or Edenbridge. Classes take place on either a Saturday or on a weekday evening. The Saturday classes run 09:30-17:00, while the evening classes run 18:00-21:00.

Lunch/dinner is not provided. Please bring this with you if you wish.

What is a chisel?

In this class you learn the history of hand tools and what tools you would find in a craftsman’s tool chest. You will also learn the basics of wood grain and movement as well as different traditional joints, such as dovetails. Of course, you will have the opportunity to use the tools for yourself! Theory will be backed up with practical experiments, and you will get to try your hand at making a half-lap coaster and dovetail joint.

This class is designed for beginners, someone who has next to no experience with hand tools, and is eager to widen their knowledge to start a new hobby. It is a one day class, and is roughly 30% discussion and 70% hands on.

£145

Wedged mortice and tenon toolbox

With a total of 8 mortice and tenon joints, you have plenty of opportunity to refine your skill to make the perfect joint. There are also a variety of other skills learnt too, such as using a spokeshave, fret saw and rabbiting plane. This handy toolbox can be used for all sorts, not just hand tools: gardening tools? magazine rack? craft supplies?

This class is designed for someone who is a good DIYer, someone who knows their way around a saw. Or even someone who wants to perfect their woodwork skills further - you may have built your own shelves, but want to experience hardwood and hand tools. This is a two day course, which is 90% hands on.

£265

Shaker Table

The most comprehensive and in depth course currently offered. Enabling you to learn how to use a large variety of powertools, handtools and machines confidently and safely.

The 9 evening classes that make up the course are held in my cabinet makers’ workshop where it is set up to teach you how to use circular saws, bandsaws, routers, hand planes, chisels and so many more tools to a high degree. At the end of the class you will have a solid oak side table/bedside table to use around your home and show off your skill.

You will be learning a combination of traditional joints such as mortise and tenons, as well as modern alternatives. Using modern machines alongside traditional tools ensures that you come away with the knowledge to tackle any home DIY project.

This class is 90% hands on. A huge varietly of knowledge is taught about every step of the making journey. It is strongly advised that you have some prior woodwork knowledge - whether from working around the house, or you have completed one of the other classes aimed towards beginners.

The classes will run on a Tuesday evening, for three consecutive Tuesdays, with the fourth being skipped. This repeats three times to make up 9 evenings in total. The whole experience including all material costs: £675

Mallet Making

This class is held across three evenings, on a Tuesday for three consecutive weeks, 6pm-9pm. In this class you will make a solid oak mallet that can be used to kickstart your woodworking journey. There are a variety of skills learnt while making the mallet, including planing, mortising and marking out work properly. You will then learn to make a halving joint, using your new mallet! It is very rewarding to use tools that you have made, and it will last a lifetime.

This class is designed for beginner to intermediate skill levels. Whether you intend to continue with your woodwork journey or not, the mallet is a great way to learn different techniques and is an enjoyabe class. This class is 90% hands on.

£145 for the whole experience.

Each participant works on their own workbench, with a wide selection of high quality handtools.
